Betty Boyd

Biography

Senator Betty Boyd has lived in Lakewood since 1974. She has a long track record of involvement in the community. Currently she serves as a member of the Boards of Directors of Jeffco Action Center, the main provider of emergency services to the needy in Jefferson County, and of Lutheran Family Services of Colorado, an agency providing child welfare, foster care, and adoption services as well as services to seniors and refugees.

As a board member of Citizens for Lakewood’s Future, Betty worked side-by-side with neighborhood groups to solve tough, everyday problems and to encourage citizen involvement. She is a past president of the Lakewood Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Betty is a graduate of Leadership Lakewood, now known as Leadership Jefferson County and chaired the Jefferson County Good News Coalition, a group that recognizes those making a positive difference in the community.

For ten years Senator Boyd worked with legislators to address issues facing working families and low income people such as affordable housing and family support, as well as advocating for a children’s code that protects the best interest of the child. She accomplished this work in her position as Director of the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry. Later, as Director of Campaigns and Development for Caring Connection, she managed workplace giving campaigns to promote employee support for charitable non-profit agencies that improve the lives of members of our community.

Betty is also active in the faith community and has served as president of the regional organization Lutheran Church Women, later serving on the national board. She led the reorganization of churches in a five-state region when a major merger of Lutheran Churches occurred in 1987. She is a past president of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Lakewood.

Betty earned a baccalaureate degree in Sociology from Upsala College in New Jersey, the first in her family to do so. She and her husband Doug have two adult children, Jim and Kirsten, both graduates of Green Mountain High School and the University of Colorado, Boulder.
